Flu Season Begins…

Flu Virus

6 Simple Steps to reduce your risk of the Flu

Another flu season is upon us and it is important that we are prepared.  To build awareness of this potentially life-threatening virus, we will be passing along some helpful reminders this week.  The good news is that currently, there is no world-wide pandemic or panic for that matter.  The bad news is that the flu illness and death are  still a real risk to many Americans.   We suggest you consult your doctor to find out if a flu shot is in your best interest.  Other than flu shots there are several common sense measures all of us can take to prevent spreading the virus this season.

Here are two quick tips to help prevent the flu:

  1. Avoid Close Contact - This means stay away from people who you know are sick.  It also means that if you are sick but have to be around others, keep your distance.
  2. Stay Home - If everyone stayed home when they were sick there would be fewer sick people.  If at all possible, stay home from school, work or errands while you are sick.  This will help prevent passing your germs to others.
  3. Cover your mouth and nose – When you sneeze or cough, your germs go airborne!  Never cough or sneeze into your hands.  Extend your arm out, point your face into your upper arm region and prevent your germs from being passed.
  4. Clean your hands – Washing your hands will help protect you from transmitting germs to and from your body.  Use soap and water or hand sanitizers to help protect you.
  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth – These are the 3 areas where germs get your body.  Touching the eyes, nose or mouth with your hands amounts to you delivering germs into your body.
  6. Practice good health habits – Your body needs the proper nutrition, exercise, fluids and rest to be able to maintain optimal health.  Taking care of your body physically will allow your system to fight the germs and help protect you.

All of us at MFASCO Health & Safety want you to have a healthy and happy flu season.  Practicing these flu prevention tips will help reduce passing the flu.  These 6 points are great advice provided from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov) .  You can see the complete document here.

Understanding & Treating Burns

Oven Burn

An example of an oven burn

Nobody wants to get burned (literally) but most of us will at some point in our lives.  Understanding what happens to your skin when it is burned will help you determine what type of treatment/response to provide.  The medical community had determined that there are 3 levels of burns.

1st Degree – Superficial burn. The surface of the skin is damaged, but the epidermis( the outermost layer of skin) is still intact.  This is where your skin may turn red and you feel some pain at the wound area.

2nd Degree – Damage that has extended through the epidermis and into the dermis  (the second layer of skin).   Second-degree burns are also known as partial-thickness burns.  You will have blistering and redness with a 2nd degree burn.  Fluid loss, heat loss and infection can take place.

3 rd Degree – The burn has destroyed both the epidermis and dermis. The victim has the same trouble with fluid loss, heat loss, and infection that come with second-degree burns. Full-thickness burns also cause nerve death, so the victim may not be able to feel anything in the area of the burn.  The burn has gone all the way through the skin and into the fatty tissue of the body.

Here is a good video recapping the different types of burns. There is a brief commercial, but it is work the wait.  A more in depth look at this subject can be found here.

Treating Burns -Once we determine what type of burn, we can give the proper response and treatment.  Don’t risk infection or other complications from a burn.  Here are a few points to remember when treating a burn.

  1. STAY SAFE! Do not let the rescuer get burned trying to save the victim. Follow universal precautions and wear personal protective equipment if you have it.
  2. Stop the burning process.  Heat penetrates and radiates deeper into the skin.  Immediately begin to cool the affected area with cool running water.
  3. Examine the skin to see what damage there is.  Look for blisters or charred skin.  Either of these means potential complications.  If the affected area is larger than an arm, leg or whole stomach area, call 911 immediately and/or get the victim to the emergency department immediately.
  4. Anyone with burns to the face hands, feet or genitalia need immediate emergency treatment.
  5. 1st degree burns can be treated with topical burn products.  Water based burn products like Water-Jel or Burn Free help cool the burn and reduce pain at the same time.

A good article covering all of the basics for burn treatment including the points above can be found here.  and a great short video explanation can be found here.  Be Safe– know your burns and how to treat them.

September is National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

September is National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery MonthSeptember is National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month.  What is Recovery Month and why are we promoting this?

The Recovery Month observance highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible.

Each September, thousands of treatment programs around the country celebrate their successes and share them with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues in an effort to educate the public about treatment, how it works, for whom, and why.

Recovery Month also serves to educate the public on substance abuse as a national health crisis, that addiction is a treatable disease, and that recovery is possible. Educating the public reduces the stigma associated with addiction and treatment. Visit visit http://www.recoverymonth.gov/ to learn how you can seek help or help others.

We’ve found that accountability is key in any addiction recovery program.  Our DrugCheck Drug Tests are a helpful tool in this process.
